About Timo

In his emerging international practice Timo represents entrepreneurs and high net worth individuals with their international investments and transactions. Timo is from Hamburg, Germany, and studied law in Germany and in the United States. He is admitted to practice law in both countries. Timo is also a bar certified specialist in tax law in Germany and has worked as an accountant for many years.

In another life he also strived to become a China investment expert and studied international business and Mandarin in Beijing, China.

Throughout his now 20 yearlong career Timo worked in high end tax boutiques and as CFO and general counsel in a German company with over 1,500 employees. For 7 years he was working with one of the most established German/American law firms in the United States. Timo is specialized in foreign direct investments in either the United States or Germany and is an expert in German/U.S. tax questions.

He also worked on many business-immigration matters in both countries and is certified by the German government to counsel on emigration to the United States, a qualification only practitioners with years of experience in U.S./German relations can achieve.

Timo has helped numerous startups and established businesses to form subsidiaries in the United States and in Germany, formed countless corporations and LLCs and counseled on various corporate and commercial matters. Namely shareholder agreements, operating agreements, joint venture agreements, seed and angel investment, distribution agreements, agency agreements, personal service and employment agreements, technology transfer and licensing agreements.

Timo has worked with clients from various industries such as international shipping, international marine insurance, health care and life science, software and tech companies, machinery and automation as well as many international trade and real estate companies.

Timo also has a solid foundation in international tax compliance such as Foreign Accounts Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) FinCEN Form 114, IRS Forms 5471 (information return for U.S. persons with respect to certain foreign corporations), 5472 (information return of a 25% foreign owned U.S. corporation or foreign corporations engaged in a U.S. trade or business), 8865 (return of U.S. persons with respect to interest in certain foreign partnerships), 8938 (statement of specified foreign financial assets), 3520 (annual return to report transactions with foreign trusts and receipt of certain foreign gifts). He has experience with the German and U.S. exit tax and controlled foreign corporation regimes (CFC). He works closely with CPAs in both Germany and the U.S. and is often times the go to tax lawyer for either side.

For high net worth individuals, Timo also provides structuring of international real estate investments, international estate planning with trusts and other entities and he assists on international probate matters.  

In his spare time Timo enjoys cooking for family and friends, is an avid reader of his favorite author John Le Carré, and a practitioner of Chinese Martial Arts.
